Hey all,

So I am applying for PR for my American wife. We moved to Canada (Ontario) ~ a year ago after living together in England for several years. Before we left England I purchased her Cigna Global health insurance - it covers both in-patient and out-patient (ie. trips to doctor etc.). It is quite pricey, paying about $3,000/year in Canadian dollars.

We are looking for a cheaper alternative but don't have any idea where to look. All I can see for people who do not yet have PR is regular travel insurance but generally you cannot buy those once you are in country and they only cover in-patient emergency stuff - I tried BlueCross but they only offered travel medical insurance.

Any suggestions?

Also, I was reading that in Ontario she can apply for OHIP once her PR application has been received and has been checked for completeness. Is this true?

She will only qualify to apply for OHIP when she has AIP which is the stage right before approval. If she is working and has a full-time job that lasts over 6 months then she can apply for OHIP. Comprehensive insurance is expensive. There aren’t many policies and you are getting a reasonable price. Most pay out of pocket and get travel insurance for emergencies.
