My partner and I are from England; I am going to Ottawa on a Master Student permit this September with the letter of introduction granted, and my partner will be coming with me on an open work permit with the letter of introduction granted.
I understand that the open work permit holder would require to hold a valid/sufficient health insurance on arrival at the border. My question is how long should the coverage of the health insurance be to be considered as adequate?
Both of our letters of introduction have a validity until 1 December 2026 but I appear to struggle to source an insurance policy that would cover over more than 2 years, would getting a policy shorter than the duration of the permit have an adverse impact for the open work permits to be granted? My partner has every intention to look for a job as soon we arrive but of course we cannot guarantee to the immigration officer that my partner will ascertain a job within x months.

It is within the paragraphs of the POE letter where it says we need to ensure we have adequate health insurance- I have copied and pasted the relevant paragraph:
Health insurance: Temporary workers are only eligible for public health insurance in some provinces or territories. Make sure that you and any dependants coming with you to Canada have either adequate health care insurance or enough money in case you need medical attention.

Do you plan to add your partner to your international student health plan? If not they will only qualify for OHIP once they have a full-time job that will last over 6 months. There may be a gap between when international student medical coverage starts and when you are arriving in Canada.
