Hello All, My wife and I are in Toronto. I have health insurance from my college. She has her SOWP but no health insurance. To add her to my health insurance is expensive.
What affordable health insurance options are available for her?
She is not employed as yet? (we just landed) .

Manulife offers an affordable (around $30/month) health insurance on a monthly package. Once your wife gets a job, she may qualify for OHIP if her job offer is for at least six months.
So you have health cover and your wife doesn't, that's risky, cost of medical treatment in Canada can be expensive, you should have got cover for your wife before travelling

Adding your spouse to UHIP is the best option. If your wife is planning on working once she finds a full-time job thqt will last over 6 months she cqn apply for OHIP. When applying to come to Canada you had to show that you had the funds to support her while in Canada so you should have the funds available.
Sorry, I thought the wife was a temporary resident, being on SOWP... AFAIK, even college health insurance for international students also basically covers emergency cases. But please do correct me if I’m wrong.

Looks like you have to enrol your dependents in UHIP unless they qualify for OHIP. UHIP is not only emergency coverage. Would suggest you look at what is covered.
