For me they didn't cover from day 1.
I have applied on 3-july and the service ontario staff said: health coverage will start from 01-sep
New comer centre also said the same.
Many people went in financial panic after their children(PR) got hospitalized without health insurance coverage for first 3 months. My friend is one of them.
This is INCORRECT. In ontario you MUST wait 90 days. With children it is always best to have coverage JUST in case. We used blue cross and it was very affordable
Just be aware that it is coverage for emergency situations only and not routine care. Always best to avoid hospitals if it doesn't require high level of care. There are walk-in clinics, family doctors, etc. In some countries is common to go to the emergency room for colds, stomach upset, etc. New Canadians tend to use the emergency room as a walk-in clinic if nobody has told them about other options.

If your family have private medical insurance coverage at home, check the insurance policy. Sometime it provides out of country coverage for up to 90 days.
Yes and the insurance company may also refuse to pay the $1000 cost.if you could have gone to a GP or walk-in clinic. Yes you don't get treatment if you go to the ER with a cold because there isn't any treatment unless you are extremely dehydrated. Ontario penalizes GPs if their patients go to the ER and don't use the after hours clinic that is run by your group of doctors. My doctor got in trouble because I was flagged by the ER for an unnecessary visit that should have been seen in a clinic. We fought it because 30 minutes after they discharged me the ER realized I had a collapsed lung. The radiologist caught it because they do a 2nd check of the imaging after the ER physicians. The doctor told me he happened to look at the x-ray again and saw it. He didn't realize I know the medical system. A chest tube and a few days in hospital was definitely appropriate use of the ER. See a lot of people who don't need to be in the ER when I go there. Plenty of people who need to be there as well but some people are pretty wimpy and don't know how to deal with a regular cold or flu or slight ache or pain. That or they want the ER to deal with all there chronic disease management. Different countries have different medical systems so many are used to going to the ER for minor issues which shouldn't be the case in Canada. If you are on the fence don't wait to get care because you are afraid you are not using the ER appropriately. Better to be safe than sorry.
