Dear all,
My wife is pregnant, unfortunately she is not a PR card holder and I am. Would she be able to deliver her baby in canada as she intends to deliver there ? I understand that she would have to pay as a tourist as she would not be granted health coverage. Would the baby be recognized as a canadian citizen? Kindly advise please.

Your wife can have the baby in canada. But expect to pay the medical cost to deliver the baby yourself. The baby will be canadian citizen by birth. Tourist medical insurance will not cover it as she has a pre-existing medical condition (she's pregnant now). Insurance will not cover baby delivery less than 9 month after buying insurance.

why dont u try in US . Take a visit to US for your wife so child will become US citizen by birth and there i hope good medical facilities are available. your wife and child will eventualy become PR and citizens after some time so u r child will be dual citizen of US and canada.
ramkris that would be the plan B as I have my parents and my siblings residing in canada. but yes I am looking at options.

Look at using a midwife. Services are free even to visitors, but wait time for getting one can be long. Then you can minimize cost of doctors, hospital visits etc.
However if some complications happen and she is forced to undergo emergency care or stay in the hospital for an extended time, the costs can skyrocket quickly.

Is there any difference between citizen by birth and citizen by PR process. If your parents are there this would be very good except for some scheduled scannings which you should be able to pay?. if you have abundant money in extreme cases go for delivery in canada as a visitor. otherwise why dont u apply for her as a PR it self as it is taking 6 to 9 months if every thing is clear.
The idea of just having the baby in the US has got to be one of the more ridiculous ideas I've heard in a while. If the OP is concerned about out of pocket costs in Canada for delivering a baby, then he should be just about ready for a coronary to pay out of pocket costs to have a baby in the US. Think upward of 20 grand to deliver a baby in the US. That ought to just about cover the hospital/doctors/pediatrician and nursury stay for 24 hours or so. If you have an emergency problem after that, well, I certainly hope you are able to get a new mortgage on your house or something because you WILL need it to pay any costs incurred for that situation.

When we had baby delivered in US, if we didn't have insurance, it would cost us 50 grand, by C-section. But because we had work insurance, we only had to pay about 2000. So it is not a good idea to have a baby in US unless you have insurance that will cover the cost in US.
So the question is, is it worth 50 grand to deliver the baby in US so the baby have US citizenship?

It can be. Birth tourism to the US is quite popular among women from Asia.

op s children will eventually become canadian citizens any way since he is PR but i dont know if theres any difference citizen by birth and other way. My suggestion is if he is willing to spend some money he could also try US and as some one mentioned he can try birth tourism if
50K for a citizenship... I think there are better ways to provide a better future for your children and saving that amount of money for their education sounds better to me. ???

it would be waste of money for a child who eventually becomes citizen in future.

It is a waste of money if child becomes Canadian citizen eventually. Plus on top of that, the child will have to pay US income tax on worldwide income regardless where the child lives.
BTW the 50 grand I mentioned was for C-Section. So for natural delivery probably go 20-25 grand.
So it is really worth spending up to 25-50 grand so your child have to report US income tax for rest of the child's life?

There are subtle differences but for the vast majority of people (99.9%) the difference doesn't really matter
