What is your status in US now, what you mean not any visa? They must have let you in on some status, you can file change of status from that to H4.
Canadians can enter US without any visa legally. So that’s my status. My husband is on h1b.
I prefer I change of status from within US. Hence my question. Thanks

Check your i94 and see what visa are you allowed on. You can file COS, however the COS takes time for it to get approved. Check the implications what if its taking more than 6months and how can you extend your stay without crossing the border. If you cross the border while COS is in process it gets voided.
ps: Its easier if you activate your H4 at the border and then apply for H4ead.
