What nationality are you first of all?
Remember that most of this sites information is for applying for Canadian visas. So some of the things said on this site is not always applicable to the United States?
First let me know what your nationality is. If it is other then Canadian, then you will have to go through quite a process of applying for a visitors visa. If you are visiting then you will HAVE to provide round trip tickets. If you don't the Canadian Embassy will be suspicious that you wont go back to your own country, therefore leaving you with NO visa.
Give me a bit more information about your situation and your plans and then I will send you a longer more detailed explanation. Ok?
American citizens don't need visas to enter Canada. Officers at the POEs normally grant visitors 6 months entry. I am not sure about having a round airfare though. Maybe you should or just show that you have enough money to buy the return airfare if you decide not get a round trip air fare. Just have enough proof that you're just coming for a visit, like a job and a home you're going back to after your allowed visit is up.
as an american you do not need to show a round trip ticket at the POE. this is cos you can claim you are going back by road. however it will be advisable to have enough money on you but in most cases they may not even worry you about this
