My girlfriend on a visitor visa (status expires in June, but we will file for extension) is giving birth to our baby in late May. I'll be able to put in renew of my PR card in September and right after that I will sponsor her under common-law.
Anyway, I've been told by the hospital that even though I will pay for the delivery out of pocket - I may have to pay for the baby too! I was under the impressions that a baby that's born here is going to get the Canadian birth certificate but the hospital staff says that if the mother is a visitor, then the baby's OHIP eligibility might be under question.
What is this all about? I was completely under the impressions that if baby is born here, the OHIP shouldn't be an issue.
I remember from reading previous posts about this that as the baby will be born in Canada it will be a Canadian citizen therefore, eligible for OHIP from birth. As you have said you and your partner will be responsible for the costs of the birth as she is only a visitor in Canada and OHIP would not cover this.
Even if neither of you were eligible for OHIP there is advice on how you would register your baby.

There's insurance coverage for pregnancy related emergencies that you might want to look at- plus it's a visitors insurance that covers for sicknesses and injuries if the person doesn't have OHIP.
