Form 16 and payslips

Hi,

Are form 16s and payslips absolutely mandatory? I have ref letters from my employers in required format but don't have the payslips since I have mostly worked with small companies paying by cash.

If reference letters are there, then no need of pay slips. Proof of funds should be shown separately.
