Flight to Canada thru a connecting flight

Hello,

I need some insight. I am flying to Canada, however, I am connecting through the USA. Does the covid test need to be done 72 hour prior to my first departure or is the 72 hours prior to my second departure(the connecting flight). The ticket was bought as one but it has a connection and it is the same airline.

Any insight will be appreciated.
