Hello, I sent in a Extension application to become common law, and I asked for a year but they gave me 8 months from my original expiry date, well 6 months from the day it was accepted. Is it ok once my six months is up to send in another extension for the remainder of what I need to show we are common law? Or is it not ok to extend since they gave me less then what I requested the first time. Are they also going to be more leanient perhaps? And why would they only extend for half the time?

Visitor visa extensions are only granted up to 6 months, then you have to apply for another extension. They already gave you the maximum possible, it has nothing to do with being lenient. Apply for another extension a month or so before your current extension runs out. Show them plenty of proof of your relationship and that you have money, house, etc. And if all is good they will give you another 6 month extension.
Hi there,
I actually had an extension for 1 year, but this was 3 years ago, maybe it changed ?
In any case what I was told at that time is that they have to see that you´re not going to be a burden to Canada, you have to prove that you have enough money to support yourself for all that period, with bank and credit card statements, and your partner should write a letter stating the he/she will provide free accomodation and financial support for you. You can apply again for another extension after this one and then you´ll get the time to be common-law.
Hope it helps
