My visitor record isn't up until march, but I want to make sure I have my ducks in a row..
I am hoping to extend for a year to allow for us to establish common law.
First, how do I go about doing that?
Second, anything I should know? Tips, tricks and pointers please!
We've dated for two years and will be going for PR as soon as we can. We have 2 kids and I'm just hoping not to get kicked out in the process.
For the record, I'm a US citizen, he's Canadian.
Thanks in advance.

Normal extension would do. You have a genuine reason to extend.

There is no such thing as "visitor visa".
Use the tool: http://www.cic.gc.ca/ctc-vac/getting-started.asp
Chose "Application to Change Conditions, Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Visitor or Temporary Resident " when prompted.
