Well, only if you enter by air or sea. You do not need ESTA authorization to enter by land.
Furthermore, persons traveling to the U.S.A. under the visa-waiver program may only stay for 90 days and cannot extend this time. The six month time limit is for persons entering Canada only.

Since you were an Australian passport-holder you do not need a visa to travel to Canada or the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program. However, you do need to apply online, free, an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) at least three days before you wish to enter the U.S. You may stay as a traveller in either country for as long as six months unless the Custom or Immigration Officer at the border put a limtation on your passport.
You can certainly apply for jobs, but you will have to have the work permit before you can begin working, and you have to qualify the same way as everyone else.

While visiting as a tourist (with visa-free passport) for 6 months, can one apply for jobs in Canada and get WP?

If you are from a country whose citizens do not need a visa to enter Canada, you may be able to obtain your work permit from a port of entry once you have a positive labour market opinion.
i was just reading this topic, and I would like to ask, when i send with my application for extending my stay, is it enough to send thouse documents with my application ? >>>>> a copy of my bank-account, a letter from my fiance that he sponsors me the time i am here with him, a letter from his company where he works, a letter from the government of my homecountry Austria, that i have an apparment there. Should i maybe put into the application a letter from the parents of my fiance too, that they would sponsor me WITH my fiance ?
