Extend visitor record or apply for new study permit?

Hi there. I would appreciate it if somebody could shed some light on what I need to do. I arrived in Canada as a Temporary worker for 1 year. I'm currently waiting for the decision on my work permit extension so I have maintained status. My wife and kids arrived with me and obtained an open work permit and a visitor record at the POE respectively. My minor kids are currently in school. What path do I need to follow to extend my kids status so they can keep studying? Should I apply for a visitor visa extension? or a study permit? Thank you in advance for any guidance provided.
