So I'm taking my personal car to Canada from US. It's worth $2000 at most and the export requirements are so confusing. First is says you have to get an EIN (which I did) and then AES export crap. On the cbp it says you have to file export no matter the value, but then it says see "When to file EEI" and then under that it says you don't have to if the value is less than $2500 for each item OR the ultimate destination is Canada (which both apply) so... WHAT DO I DO?!
Also I attempted to sign up for the AES thing and it wanted me to take a 30 questions quiz on all these export laws... is that for real?! What am I missing here?
Remember that your car will likely need some updating for import anyway. Most obviously, it will need either daytime running lights or for the low-beams to be permanently wired 'on' when the engine is running.
Needing even one or two hours of expensive mechanic-time make not be worth it for a car worth "$2000 at most".
