My PR card expired in April. I have sent for renewal but the application was returned due to the photos not being sharp / in focus ( thanks Shopper drug mart ). I have now resent but it does not look like the new card will arrive in time for my trip to the UK in 2 weeks ( I have UK passport )
My understanding is that I can fly to UK and then fly back to the US and cross the border to Canada via rental car as long as I can prove my PR status - using drivers licence , health card , SIN card. and show I have applied for renewal..
Will I have any issues ? Has anyone taken this option ? Any advice much appreciated

Yes - that's correct. Your other option is to apply for a PRTD while you are in the UK if you are there long enough and want to fly directly to Canada when you return. Recommend you read through the discussions in the Permanent Residency Obligation section of this forum where this topic is discussed.
