My current passport expired while still maintaining a valid PR card which was sufficient for me to work and stay in Canada.
I recently submitted for Citizenship based on the number of days I have lived in Canada, however the officer has indicated that my current passport was expired last year (during COVID). I did not renew the passport due to COVID causing backlog and disrupting travel plans and also my current nationality does not allow Dual Citizenship so I decided not to renew as I will be applying for a Canadian Citizenship.
Shall I say the same to the IRCC officer ? would it cause any problems in the application ?

Based on your profile logo, I assume your current nationality is India? You aren't a Canadian citizen yet so you won't be holding dual citizenship if you renew your passport now. There are no legal hurdles to renew your Indian passport until you've taken the oath of citizenship in Canada.
Having said that, you don't need a valid passport to apply for citizenship. You can simply tell the officer that you don't have any travel plans in the foreseeable future so you have decided NOT to renew your passport. If you don't have a valid passport, you'll have to fill in the explanation box in the application form as to why you haven't renewed your passport. You can simply tell them that you don't intend to travel internationally in the foreseeable future and hence you've not applied for a passport.

Hi. my kids are also planning on applying for a canadian citizenship but their Philippine passports already expired last year in July. Were you able to apply for a citizenship with an expired passport?
