Entry into US from Canada for South African Permanent Residence

Hi everyone!

My husband got PR a few months ago. He’s a South African citizen and Canadian permanent resident. Can we drive across the border from canada to the US? Do we need to get a visa before hand or can we do it at the border? Any South Africans who have done it? Also does he need 6 months on his passport?

South Africa is not included in the US visa waiver program so will need a visa to enter the US. Not possible to apply at the border , have to apply at a US consulate or embassy.

Being Canadian PR doesn't give him special privilege to enter into US.
If his country is not included in the US visa waiver program, he needs to apply for US visa. (Fill-in application, get photo ready, make an appointment at US consulate or embassy)
And since his passport is about to expire, it make sense to apply for a new passport before applying for the US visa.
