I just want to ask if PR status holder can enter USA to participate in a conference without USA visa? If not, then what is the requirement for the said purpose.

YOU WILL REQUIRED SHORT STAY VISA PROBABLY VISIT VISA

A Canadian PR doesn't allow you to enter the US without a visa. Your citizenship will determine if you need a visa to the US or not.

I never did think about this one before myself.

Carrying both my passport and a Canadian PR card, can I simply drive to the US border and enter USA and back at home again so I can visit my family whenever I want? like for the American Thanksgiving day?

Like I said before, a Canadian PR doesn't allow you to enter the US without a visa. Your citizenship will still determine your need for a visa, just like it did before you got PR.

It is not exactly fair that Canada allows US green card holders to visit Canada without a visit visa but it doesn't work the other way around.
