Hi all,

I'm asking this question for a friend of mine (Chinese citizen - mainland). He has been accepted into a Master's program at a university in Ontario. He said that he can enter Canada with only his passport and his student ID (plus the letter of acceptance). Is this true, or will he first need to obtain his student visa??

Please help if you can!

Thanks,
FS

As far as I know anyone taking studies that is 6 months or more in duration needs a study permit and must pass a medical exam. The other advantage to getting a study permit is that if you plan to work or extend your studies, then it is just a matter of submitting required documents which can be done inside Canada(mailing to Vegreville, Alberta).

Study permits are not issued at the border. He needs to apply in advance to the visa office responsible for his country.

That's what I thought. Thanks.

Are you sure he wasn't drunk when he was saying this? :P

He's just young and a tad naive. I wasn't 100% sure myself, as I am not familiar with student visas.
