I am facing a complex issue with my passport and VISA and would require your thoughts on this. I am an international student with study permit and have been studying in Canada for 3 years now. My passport, as well as Multiple VISA entry, will both expire in August 2014. I am going to my home country about 3 months sooner to renew my passport and then travel back to Canada one-month before my VISA expiry (July) which is stamped on my old passport by then. However, I am not sure if this plan works like this and if CIC have regulations on minimum number of months for validity of VISA before entering Canada.

I am not sure about specific situation with Canada, but in general, international travels cannot be done with an expiring passport. In most situations, the passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months (or could be 3) after the travel date. If this is the situation with Canada, they might not even let you in the plane (outbound from Canada). So, I think you should find this out for sure before planning your travel. If you can, then renewing your passport ASAP from within Canada would be a good idea. Once you have a new passport, I think you will be able to enter Canada with your old visa in your old passport.
Above comment is based on what I know for US, so others more familiar with Canada might be able to give you a more precise answer.
