This is an interesting question. I was working for a company in which I was making 20/hour. I was laid off which I was aware of on April 15th, 14 and My husband, who I am going to sponsor, moved provinces to find work. On that latest ROE it actually says, REASON FOR TERMINATION; END OF CONTRACT/ SHORTAGE OF WORK. The same company already offered my employment for October onward. Should I have that offer of employment written out to send in with my application? We have been here since April 17th, 2014 and I have send tons of resumes out with no reply for a job, most likely because I am a female, wanting hard physical labor jobs. My financials are at the point where I may need to apply for EI benefits to be backpayed from the time we arrived in BC until now, with the intention that I will have a job at the end of the 2 week waiting period. We are hoping to send our application off by the end of May, and I need to have the "employed" status on my documents, to sponsor my husband without being questioned as a sponsor. I am wondering if collecting EI for just a month of no work is acceptable, or if that will massively hinder my chances of being approved as a sponsor... This is a sh*t pickle to be in but I have no other choice than to pose the question. We can in no way jeopardize Dan's PR for any reason.

All answers are appreciated, thanks guys. X

From what I have read in other threads, EI is NOT social assistance and will have no negative impact on your sponsorship of...Dan. ;)

You don't actually need to be employed; you need to show that you guys can support yourselves without welfare (keep in mind that EI is NOT welfare). This can be shown in many ways, such as your spouse's income, any savings/investments you guys have, support letters from family, a written plan about your job prospects and how you will support yourselves etc.

People are unemployed for any number of reasons: stay-at-home spouse/parent, full-time, student, laid off, living in foreign country without a work permit. Canada doesn't deny unemployed people the right to sponsor their spouse. Many, many others have successfully sponsored their spouses while being unemployed.

As Ponga said, EI is not welfare and claiming it will have no effect on the PR app.
