I have an emergency situation, I have to return to Italy as soon as possible. The problem is my passport expired in April (long story) and I don't know if I'm allowed to board an airplane to go to my home country without a valid passport. I only have enough money for a plane ticket and probably a couple nights at a hotel. I found a couple flights to Italy with either 1 or 2 stops in Germany or London.
Would I be able to board a plane to my home country in my situation? I know Italy does accept me back in regardless of expired document (I have a valid national ID anyway) but I'm not sure about airlines and Canada's policies.

You need a valid passport or emergency travel document. You will not be allowed to board with a national ID. Contact the Italian embassy / consulate and see what it will take to get an emergeny travel document.

They said they'll issue me an emergency travel document but I will have to first travel to Vancouver for it or apply and get it send via mail which is not an option. Either way I can't wait for the temporary passport to arrive nor do I have an address to have it sent to.
What would happen if I go to the airport and ask the CBSA to deport me instead? I would assume this to be faster.

You cannot just go to the airport and ask CBSA to deport you. It doesn't work that way. This will not work.
Secondly, you would still need to have a valid travel document or passport to be put on a plane. In situations where CBSA is deporting someone and that person doesn't have a valid passport, they will reach out to the relevant embassy / consulate to obtain a travel document. This generally takes months.
You need to work with your embassy / consulate to obtain the emergency travel document.
If you want to be able to leave as soon as possible, the only option is to work with your embassy / consulate and get their help to secure the travel document.

Another option is you hitchhike to Halifax or NL and try to find someone who might be going on a Trans-Atlantic voyage like on a chartered/private yacht. Port of Halifax to Port of Lisboa is about 2900nm so about 2 weeks of journey. Once you are in Lisbon, you can gain entry in to EU using your National Identity card and hitchhike your way to Italy. Quite the adventure and farfetched probably but in theory it should work as SEF can't deny you entry in to Portugal if you present a valid EU National ID card. Start by posting an ad on Kijiji maybe lol. All the best and I hope you make it home!
