Hi All,

Thank you for reading this post.

I am a dual UK/Canadian citizen and have spent all my life living in the UK. My wife and I were married a few years back in British Columbia and would like to move to Toronto in the not too distant future. As a Canadian citizen I would like to try and sponsor her to come over hassle free.

When my wife and I were married we double barrelled our names and had this legally changed in the UK (now updated on bank statements / drivers licence etc). Our actual wedding certificate is in our maiden names. I cannot update my UK passport to the new name until my Canadian passport is updated, and it seems I cannot legally change my Canadian name until I am residing in the Ontario province.

I suppose I just want some clarity or advice on how best to explain this difference on the Sponsor application forms as some of the proof I will provide is in my new double barrelled name (bank statements etc). I can provide a legal deed poll from the UK showing the name change and refer to it in my plan/statement describing my intention to move to Canada? Has anyone encountered this type of thing before?

Many Thanks for reading,
Chris

A Canadian citizen can legally change name at the Canadian consulate outside Canada..

What do you mean hassle free?

Hi Steaky,

Thanks for the reply.

I didn’t know about changing the name at the consulate, I haven’t come across any info on this previously. Will look into it.

By hassle free, I meant as smooth a process as possible.

Thanks
