I came here last march, on a 1 year work visa, so my stated intent when arriving was simply to work.
My GF (Canadian) joined me 3 months later.
Our honest aim was to live together for a year and see how things went.
Happily, things have gone superbly, so we are now applying for permanent residency for myself.
I just visited Ireland for a wedding and upon return here, Toronto, I was asked by the I/O what my purpose was: I was clear and honest about my aim, ie to submit our application for my permanent residency asap. She gave me a visitor record no problem, on the condition that I leave on my prebooked flight in October.
Yes, that's "dual intent." You intend to stay permanently (if approved), but in the meantime you intend to visit temporarily. If you file properly, and especially if you've already got sponsorship approval, it's likely that you can get an extension on that October deadline if you ask for it. (You'll still need a way back to Ireland to show in the extension request.)

I have a return flight booked, and can change the date to six months later so thats fine.
We do not have sponsorship approval yet - we are submitting everything (Sponsorship application, residency application, application to extend) all in one go.
I thought that might be the case. Your entire outland application for PR will get mailed to Mississauga, but your application to extend your visit goes to Vegreville. Don't send them in together. It wasn't clear to me that you knew that when you said "all in one go" so I just wanted to clarify. Good luck. Allison
You can get an extension..and will most likely get it as your visa exempt I have been extending now for the 2nd year in a row! I have been given 1 year at a time, the 1st one in 2009 was on the basis that I am applying for PR and the 2nd one I received last month was on the basis I have applied for PR
You'll get one no problem. My common law partner was given a year and didn't include anything about a return flight nor does it ask for it in the extension application. You just state you have a application in process and it shouldn't be a problem ))
