Do I need to have a valid passport for the Express Entry?

I am currently in the US, but my passport is going to expire soon. I have to renew it, but will take a few months. At what point in the Express Entry I would need a valid passport? Do I need that right from the beginning of the application, or it wont be needed until later on after receiving the ITA?

You need to have a valid passport to create EE profile.

Thank you for the answer. Do you know if I can use a travel document issued by US for creating the profile? Would that work?
