I'm planning to come to Canada From the UK through workaway and volunteer at a ranch. They are paying me Nothing except food & accommodation.
I wanted to stay for 3 months maybe 4 if possible but I can't figure out if I need a work permit. I done the questionnaire and it says I'm not eligible for a work permit and if I was, I would have to have £2000 in savings. I can't imagine every volunteer would have this so there must be a way?

The basic rule of thumb is that if you are doing a job that a Canadian COULD be paid for, you are not, in the eyes of CIC, a volunteer.
Also, food and accommodation is "payment in kind"...
Yes - you absolutely need a work permit. Your employer will need to provide you with a job offer and approved LMIA before you will be eligible to apply for a work permit.
