I flew back home to India for 3 months after receiving my COPR in Canada as the PR card hadn't arrived yet. My PGWP "worker" visa in passport is valid upto October 2018.
Do I still need to apply for the PRTD from India or will the airlines let me board the flight back to Canada based on the COPR and "worker" visa?
What if I fly to the US first on my visitor visa and then cross the border by transit bus (that I’ve used many times before leaving Canada without any issues/questions asked by Canadian border officials) with the COPR alone?
Bus/train will require a valid visa, PR card or PRTD. Easiest method is to take a cab to the border, walk across and present your passport and COPR. Should be no issue with that. Not having a PR card or PRTD isn't an issue for CBSA, only the transport companies.

The Detroit-Windsor tunnel that I use only has a transit bus service (you can’t walk over) and I’ve used it 100 times to move to/from Windsor-Detroit casually and the drivers never ask to see anything. You present the documents directly to the Canadian border officials on crossing over.
