Hi, I came to Canada on May 5 2016 on a working holiday visa which expires May 4 2018.
I sent my PR application (common-law) along with an open work permit extension application on April 16 via courier. It was arrived at 9am the next day.
I have yet to receive an acknowledgment saying they have received it. On the CIC website they mention to send it at least 30 days before your work permit expires but I only sent it about 2 and a half weeks before.
Do I have implied status and can keep working or do I have to wait for acknowledgement?
I think you mean that you sent your application in April 16 - not May 16.
The answer to your question is that you can continue to work until May 4th. You'll then have to stop working and wait for your OWP to be issued before you can begin working again. You have implied status to remain in Canada as a visitor only. Since IECs cannot be extended, you cannot continue working and have to stop as soon as your IEC expires.
You would be able to continue working if you held any form of work permit other than an IEC. IECs are a special class of work permit that cannot be extended. Your OWP will be approved in 2-4 months of your PR application being received - and at that point you can start working again.
The only way you would have been able to continue working is to have switched to a closed work permit. However this requires an approved LMIA - which takes 2-5 months for an employer to obtain (assuming they are willing). You don't have enough time left to get one at this point.
