do copies need notorized for application

hi
will be submitting my paperwork in next few weeks
question - for birth certificates, marraige certs, childrens birth certs etc. it says "copies" are ok to send
do this just mean a copy OR does the copy need to be notarized as a "certified true copy" by a notary public etc.
