Disability retirement

I'm a Canadian citizen living with my American husband in the States for over a decade now. We want to move to Canada in about a year, when my husband is eligible to retire from the federal government (age 56) with a decent pension, but he's having some problems with anxiety/depression and is considering filing for disability retirement shortly. If he did, would it negate his immigration prospects?

It shouldn't be an issue. However when you apply to sponsor him, CIC will want to see that you'll be able to support him in Canada (or he'll be able to support himself) without relying on social assistance payments. As part of the agreement to sponsor him, you'll have to sign an agreement to financially support him for three years from the day he lands in Canada and becomes a permanent resident. If he goes on social assistance in the three years after becoming a PR, you'll need to repay this money back to the government.

Awesome, thank you. Between his pension and me working (and he hopes to work when we get there as well to occupy his time) we won't need social assistance. Barring unforeseen catastrophe, of course
