Hi there, I'm hoping someone can help. I have a family member who was here on a two year student permit. Unfortunately the student permit expired in October 2016 and due to many personal reasons, that family member was not able to apply for an extension until July 2017 (approximately 8 months after permit expired). His application for extension was denied due to the long delay in applying for the extension.
Is there anything else that he can do, appeal or reapply to be allowed to study in Canada.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
There was never any chance the extension was going to be approved. He applied far far far too late and refusal was guaranteed. It was unfortunately a complete waste of money to try.
Only option now is to leave Canada and return home. It's impossible for him to restore his status from within Canada.
Once he's outside of Canada - he'll need to apply for a brand new study permit. It's quite possible this long overstay will negatively impact the application and he may want to include a letter to explain what happened. Hopefully he hasn't attended school or worked since his study permit expired last October.
