We left Canada in September for employment reasons elsewhere! All our taxes for the previous years are all paid.
We now wish to declare non-residency to Canada but are confused which is the simplest method to do this!
Form NR73 - Determining non resident status or TD tax (tick a box after filing yearly tax that your are now non-resident) form......We have had arguments from both sides which form we must complete and we feel we are going around in circles! We just want to get everything in order!
My wife got her residency status in July 2018, and we did not anticipate this move! We have no ties in Canada, just the in-laws.
No property .....No dependents
Please kindly advise which is the best approach and which form to complete
NR73 is optional, you should fill it out for your own record, but you do not need to submit it to CRA. On your 2018 tax return, indicate when you cease to be a tax resident, ie the date you left Canada. You are deemed to have disposed of any stock outside your TFSA and RRSP, you need to pay tax on any capital gain. If applicable you need to compete and submit Form T1243 and T1161.
You should also inform the provincial medical insurance plan that you are leaving the country. If you plan to keep bank accounts in Canada, inform the bank that you are no longer tax resident, same with brokerage houses.

Mad_hatter : we both received out T4s and General Tax Return is the T1 General however there isnt a section where we can input leave date like you indicated above? Is this the correct form?
No stocks so we are ok there.
Medical Insurance plan is BC was cancelled already back in Dec and they have sent us letters comfirming so thats taken care of!
We have not informed our banks and will do this promptly.
Do I Input Under - Information About Residence:
1) Other
2) China
3) N/A
4) Fill Departure Date
Can you confirm? Thanks!
2) Total Income - it states to report all sources both inside and outside of Canada. Ive only started my new job in Mid October. Where do I input this amount? Ive read step 2 through 6 but its all general T4 based questions...
Thank you so much again mad_hatter! Where can I send a pint your way?
On line 1 stated the province you have your primary residency in 2018.
Leave line 2 and 3 blank.
On line 4, fill in the date you departed from Canada.
For total income, you only needed to declare your world income up till the date you departed from Canada.
You also need to prorate your basic personal amount for the days in Canada.
