Hi. I am being sponsored by my husband for permanent residency. We submitted our application in February 2011. They are still processing it. I currently have an open work permit.
My mom passed away and I want to go to my country. How can I come back? Do I need to apply for another work permit from there or will this be an exception because it's death of an immediate family member? What if they don't allow me back into Canada - then the whole permanent residency application will be cancelled?
Thank you.
Do you hold a visa exempt or a non-visa exempt passport? If you hold a visa exempt passport, then you should be able to re-enter Canada on your passport alone. If you hold a non-visa exempt passport, then you will have to apply for a tourist visa once you have left Canada and hope it is approved (obviously no guarantees that it will be).
Unfortunately there are no exceptions granted. You will be taking a chance when you leave Canada that you may have issues re-entering Canada. If you can't reenter Canada, this will effectively cancel your application.
