I'm European and I have just been offered a job in Canada. They are working on getting me the skilled worker visa right now.
I just received my criminal record and it turns out I still have an 8 year old conviction there.
It was fraud (very minor) and the punishment was a really small fine. No jail time. Just one year probation.
Am I screwed? It's such a long time ago and no big deal to be honest. My resume is really good and
I have (except for that) a clean history.
It would suck so much if this stops me from going.
Do you apply just for working permition in Canada or as a Permanent Resident?
In first case may be they will not concider it as a big problem. I think you have to give an explanaition in your application about it and wait to see what the imigration office or canadian embassy will tell you abou this.
For permanent resident it could be unfortunatly a problem, because they are doing 100% background checking before letting you to settle down in Canada. But better clearify this issue with the imigration-officers.
Hope you will get a positive answer!

1. It depends on the conviction's equating to the Criminal Code of Canada, whether it was an offence that if committed in Canada would be a summary offence (would not make you inadmissible) and dual offence or an indictable offence both which could make you inadmissible.
2. If it was a dual or indictable offence in Canada, and since 5 years have passed since the conviction, you could apply for rehabilitation.
3. As you didn't specify what the fraud was in relation to, start your reading here: http://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/C-46/page-6.html#anchorbo-ga:l_IX and see if you can find a similar offence.
I applied under the FSW-Class NOC - 0111 and 4221 (Financial Manager 5Yrs. and University Teacher 2 yrs.). However, my Degree is in Marketing. Will this be a problem? I have experience as University Professor, Marketing Consultant, Executive Director, Financial and Marketing Manager.
I have provided full documents to CIC already... Still waiting for 2nd AOR.
