Answer : ferries

why answer isn't : "size of ferries"
Is it due to comparative form of large in the text?
Oh! I see it just now.

The reason is this : wake is from large ferries and NOT "size of ferries".

wake is a concrete noun and is physically originating from another concrete noun "large ferries". "(large) size of ferries" will be an abstract noun and is not the origin of wake. Though the "large size" of ferries is the causal reason behind the wake that damage intertidal zone, it is NOT the concrete noun from which wake is coming.

So, in should be :

The wake (concrete noun) from large (adjective/qualifier) ................................... (some other concrete noun) has caused further damage to the seashore.

Hence, the blank can only be ferries.

There is another possiblity, you can write "sized ferries" further qualifying ferries. But I think it would be an overkill.
