Hello

I'm a Canadian citizen who teaches in Vietnam. I met my boyfriend here three years ago, who is South African with English as his first language. We've been living together for two years and I want to sponspor him as a common law partner to come back to Canada with me.

I am wondering if I should hire a lawyer. I've read many forums on this post that say it is not necessary, but I'm wondering if it is for us because we are not in Canada. All our documentation to prove our relationship (lease, bills, joint back account) are from Vietnam. I obviously would really like to avoid the cost of a lawyer if possible but also do not want to risk being denied.

Also, if anyone could shed light on the likelihood we would be approved given our situation that would be very helpful. Some people have told us to just get married as it will make this process easier, but we'd like to wait if possible due to financial reasons mostly.

Any information is helpful. Thank you.

No need for a lawyer - outland sponsorship is quite normal. As long as you can prove at least one year of living together without any significant breaks then all good. You will need certified translations of any documents in Vietnamese. Marriage might make it a bit easier, but load of [people prove common law and get approved, so shouldn't be a problem. Just work through the checklists....

I don’t think getting married is something you need to do just for this, as I think it won’t make a huge difference. Just be sure you have proof of intent to move to Canada. As well as having your documents be in English or properly certified but it doesn’t matter that they’re all from Vietnam.
