Hi there,

Currently I'm working in Canada after graduating college and trying to apply for PR through express entry.

I broke up with my common law partner recently so I'm going to choose "single" on marital status.

Should I inform CIC that I broke up with my common law partner? Or just choose "singe" and CIC will automatically consider my relationship is over?

Do you know there is a form to inform CIC of our separation?

I really appreciate it if you can help me!

Thank you.

Not sure of the full details, but inform CRA of your marital status change. That's good evidence to present.

As far as I know there you do not need to approach legal authorities to enter and end a common law relationship. It depends which stage you are at. If you are in the pool, you can amend your details to single or say you are single if you are yet to enter the pool. If you have received ITA and have claimed points for your partner, then you would have to inform CIC and there could be recalculation of your points. Anything further than that in the process, you have to inform CIC as it would amount to a change in your family composition. Also, if there are children born out of the common law relationship would mean informing CIC about the children and the mother of the children.
