If someone received permanent residency in through their common law partner but later broke up with their partner 1 year later after receiving it can they keep their permanent residency status? Do they need to alert immigration some how about the relationship break up or just not inform them?

Yes - they can keep their PR status. No - they do not need to alert immigration to the break up.
