I am currently a student and my study permit ends July the 28th. I am planning on going on holidays at the beginning of July and come back a couple of weeks before my study permit expires.
My classmates told me they won't allow me back in the country if I leave because my course would have ended. But my study permit will still be valid, so I am a bit confused.

You could plan to apply before you leave for vacation to formally extend your stay as a visitor beyond your study permit end date. If you are visa exempt this process should be fairly painless.
A study permit on its own does not of course guarantee entry to the country regardless of when it expires but if you follow due process to for example extend as a visitor do not see why there should be a problem or even if you alternatively apply for a PGWP before you go on vacation.
