Clarification with respect to date of expiry on the Permanent Resident (PR) Card

I am currently a Permanent Resident of Canada and is under renewals ( my 2nd PR Card). I have reminded them and may be the renewed card gets issued before the expiry of the existing 1st PR card.

Please clarify if I can travel back to Canada (from the US) on the expiry date indicated on my existing PR Card. Can I fly back on July 11, 2010 from the US which is the Expiry Date indicated of my existing PR Card.

I am visiting my friends in the US from July 5 - July 10/11. I understand that I can apply for a one-time travel permit in the US but do not want to apply for it since it means spending a few day at the consulate in USA.
