I have a question about Civil Marriage.
If my fiance and I want to get married and have a small courthouse/civil marriage (we need to save up for the big one) is it likely that immigration Canada will CALL my family members to verify the extent of our relationship, even if I have TONS of evidence and pictures from our engagement party, etc?
I don't want to invite all my family and tell everyone we are doing this, I would rather wait until we can have a large wedding to invite everybody and let family know...
thoughts?
No, CIC will never call your family.
Though, if there is a interview request during this process, they might ask you or she/he (the applicant) why they were not present of your civil marriage.
But if you explain why they were not present up front, then I think will not be problems at all.
Good luck!
I don't think CIC will make a big deal about it. They look at pictures and they analyze everything if it's genuine or not. It doesn't matter if the wedding is big or small celebration.
My husband and I were married by a marriage commisioner in Alberta and we only had 2 witnesses and that's it. Went to the bar and called it a day! We have an Inland application and we just got an AIP last week.just state the reason why family members didn't attend the wedding. None from our family was there.

hey
Wicket08, you were in Canada on visitor visa ?? please i think am going through a similar issue. thanks

I married my husband while I was in Canada visitng from the US (visa exempt). I went through customs in Calgary with my wedding dress in hand (and the receipt), told them I was getting married and would then be returning to the US after the wedding. I had no problems.
We have the same issue about here.
Both our parents knew our plan wedding but they want it to be on church and we don't have enough money.
But we want to get married as soon as possible because I dont want to wait any longer and long distance relationship is too hard. You know what I mean. I want to be with him.
We had our civil marriage without our parents, both sides. We are on the right age though. We have two witnesses.
My question is, during the background check process, will they ask the family members about the marriage?
My family's side doesn't know about it but my husband's side knew.

CIC will not contact your family members and ask them anything...but in the application form it asks if your family knew you were getting married...and if not why....so you have to be truthful there and give an explanation...my husband and I married in a notary's office...I travelled to his country because he is Cuban and obviously was not allowed to leave his country...his family was in attendance and mine was not......mostly because my family could not afford to come but they did know about the wedding and were supportive and this is what I put in the application

I'm on a working visa when we got married. We are married for 2 years now
Thank you all so much. Very helpful

Our relationship is most definitely genuine and we have a ton of pics to prove it too

we are also going to be having an engagement party my mom is throwing for us and we have been to several "celebrations" together too

So I will definitely put in the application that we don't have the $ yet and simply would like to wait until we have the money saved to have a huge wedding and announce it to everyone
Thanks again everyone

now that I know they won't contact my family, I'm totally happy with this decision
