can anyone please tell me how long does it take to get an invitation for citizenship test after sending in the application?
I am eligible for citizenship but will be out of Canada from Oct 2018-Apr 2019. i am being sent by a Canadian company for charity work. they will be paying a stipend -not a salary. I am not sure, if i send my application in Sep 2018 and got a letter for test while being out of Canada, what can be done?

Time it takes to get a test invite varies significantly on a case by case basis, so much so that it's impossible to predict. You can make an educated guess based on your location by looking at the spreadsheet that tracks applications of forum members on a monthly basis (link in my signature), however it still won't be accurate. You could apply and inform IRCC of your travel plans using the webform, so they do not schedule the test in your absence. Alternatively and perhaps a better option IMO would be to apply after you return back to Canada.
Not to mention, the test isn't the only thing to worry about. You could be asked to provide fingerprints, or even QAE (quality assurance excercise) which is sent to applicants picked randomly. Applicant is expected to respond to these requests in a timely manner.
