Hi - I see few people not getting interview and moving to the next stage, is interview process a mandatory step these days or is it not?
If not, what should one prepare for the citizenship interview? on what basis, one will be called for interview(pre-pandemic, i think, everyone was called, not sure).

Not everyone receives an interview. "On what basis" - this isn't clear. Could be randomly picked for QA exercise or there could be something on their file that the officer needs to verify and wants to talk to the applicant in person.
For the most part, interview revolves around checking the stamps on your passports and discussion about your travel abroad during eligibility period. But it is prudent to have all the originals you submitted with your application ready, just in case you are asked.
