I am a PR residing in Canada and admitted to a Masters program...
I have had a call yesterday from someone claiming to be from the CIC, the man had an South Asian accent, he was telling me that I am facing charges since I did not update my information, I got panicked, as I have not broken any law and my immigration here to Canada was completely legit, he told me that I had to pay $500 to get the forms for reassessing and updating my information, and that he wanted to get my cell number, I gave it to him as to help me know the number (for I know CIC won't ask for money this way), he told me to reach the closest RBC and keep my cell up with them (at which point I knew it sounded shady to me) when the number called it turned out to be the same toll free number of CIC!!! At this point I closed the phone..
The way that man was talking to me sounded like it is a total scam as I know CIC won't deliver such information this way and will never ask for money transfers in this way, and the whole go to an RBC and keep the mobile open sounded like 'criminal' style....yet the number being that of CIC got me scared and worried.
I called and reported this case to Immigration Anti-Fraud who told me it is probably a scam and nothing can take off your PR except if you did a serious crime or through the violation of staying in Canada for 2 out of 5 years rule, both of which I have not done (and kept a clean record)
I am planning to call CIC first thing in the morning....did I do the right thing out there?
I think you should report it to the police as well. If the man calls again, you can pretend that you want to pay to find out where or how he wants you to pay to make it easier to trace him.
It's some kind of scam. I doubt the call was from CIC. Someone somehow obtained your information. Notify the police. There are programs that allow you to fake what number someone is calling from.
Hi,
I got the same call this morning aound 7:30 AM @ my home number. Guy said I haven't update my status in from last 2 years so they are deporting to me to my native country lol, then he said I'll tranfer you to chief Immigration officer.Yes, He had south Asian Accent .
I got his name ID number which is prolly fake, he said RCMP will be at my place in 45 mins and arrest as CIC has issued warrent against me . Then he gave me "Solution" to this situation If, I pay him $950.00 CAD over the phone they will wave all the charges against me. I hung up on him as I know CIC wont ask for money and wont call me 7:40 AM . This is very sketchy thou as display number was 888-242-2100 which is CIC's call center number. I emailed CIC couple of weeks ago to check my status I think that's how they got my information. So,these scammers has connection in CIC ??? This is bizarre!!
I will be reporting this to CIC today!!

Forget the number... it's easy to use number spoofing and VOIP to make it look like it's coming from any number. Use your common-sense. CIC would never ask for personal info or money like that.
One of my buddies got pretty similar fake phone call from CIC.
But the "funny" think is - looks likes the cheaters have phoning only to PR , or people who have file in process.
Did anybody who is Canadian Citizen received this call?
Through this forum, I would like to report an immigration fraud here by a regulated canadian immigration consultant Mr. Rajeev Rampal from Blue Ocean Immigration Inc. with ICCRC license R506938. I retained him to process my application for LMIA leading to permanent residency under express entry in Aug 2015. He charged 18000 CAD from me for processing my application and arranging a suitable employment in my field of Logistics. I paid him nearly 12000 CAD just to find out that the employment offered to me was all fake. I even spoke to the employer (Zim Recycling - Inderjeet Chopra) about it and he said that he has no information about it.
In the mean time the consultant stopped taking my calls and responding to my emails and when I emailed him that I am going to file a complaint, he showed up in Feb 2017 to tell me that my application has been rejected. Since then I am asking him for the refund of charges but he is not responding at all. He never game me any information about my application, neither I was provided with any access to my CIC account. This is so agonizing! He duped me not only with funds but he wasted my precious time as well. Now I do not know, how to initiate action against such registered professionals misleading the client ,playing with the dreams of innocent people manipulating them into giving all their finances, while fantasizing them into a bright future in Canada. Any advice will be of great help to me. Any body who is a victim of such an immigration scam or of the same person/company join me here and also can contact me at siddharth.sh77@gmail.com.
