I have a question about getting common law. Could we live with her mother for 6-8 months, and then move out on a lease into a apartment? Is this okay? If so, how could I prove I was living with her at her mothers? Would we both have to get on the utility bills of the mothers and other things like that?

Perhaps you can draft up a rental agreement even if you aren't paying rent. It is a contract that could then be notarized. I'm sure others will chime in with some better advice

I was in the same situation before we got married! My husband and I have been living with his mother here in Guatemala and didn't really have any other way of proving our co-habitation. We were gonna write up a rental agreement with her being the "lanlord" and us her tenants. I've heard of other people doing that as well.
My guess is that if you were gonna put your name on the utility bill, you would have to show a year's worth of your name on the bill, not just the one or two, know what I mean?

yeah I get that, but the other 6 months me and my girlfriend would be on the bill for the apartment, so we would be living together for a year?

Yes, you can live with your mother in law for 6 months WITH PROOF, like a lease agreement, mail delivered at the same address with both of your names on it etc..
Then when you get your own place, make sure both names are on the lease.
