I recently got married in the United States and the only legal document I received is a "certified copy" of our marriage license which is also known as a marriage abstract. Will this be good enough or should I be making a request for an "original" marriage certificate from the courthouse, if that's even possible.
Does the abstract show that you have been married a licence just says you can it doesnt say you were right. You need something that says you were and the date you were.
Yes it does have both me and my wife's signatures, the signature of the deputy that issued the license, and the signature of the officiant that married us. It also has the date and place we were married. I'm thinking maybe it's because some marriage license have a dual purpose in some state. They serve as a license and when signed by the officiant becomes a certificate. I'm not a hundred percent sure that's why I'm seeking confirmation in this forum to those who have knowledge about this.
We got married in the US and were given the "abstract" right away. It took 6 weeks for the state to process the signed marriage license and mail us the marriage certificate.
We sent a copy of the actual marriage certificate with our application, not the abstract. I believe it specifically says that they require the marriage certificate.
