Certified copies - MP office?

Hi there,

I need to get a few certified copies of translated documents. I know that CIC has a list of professionals who can do that, including a notary public. Problem is, there's only one notary in the area where we live and she charges $45 per document!! I think that's a bit over the top, but probably she takes advantage of the fact that she's the only option in this area.

So I was wondering, anyone tried to get certified copies at the local MP's office? I guess they'd do it for free? And would those copies be accepted by CIC?

You could call and ask the MP's office. We had some copies certified there, but not for CIC.

Also, is there a Multicultural Association where you live? This is an organization funded by CIC for helping immigrants settle, etc. The one in our area doesn't have a notary public, but has a commissioner of oaths (their website says "commissioner of oats" haha) who can certify documents for CIC.

10(1) The following persons are commissioners by virtue of their office or status
and are not required to apply for an appointment as a commissioner for oaths:
(a) provincial court judges;
(b) lawyers;
(c) Members of the Legislative Assembly;
(d) officers in the Canadian Armed Forces;
(e) court officials;
(f) police officers;
(g) government officials;
(h) any other person prescribed in the regulations.

I don't know if this is accurate but if a police officer can do it, then maybe they can help at the local police station? I'll give it a try.
