Hi there, just wondering what cell phone provider you all use? It would be nice to find one that doesn't charge extra when you cross the boarder. He will be in Ontario but I will be crossing frequently until I am approved *fingers crossed* and I can work there instead of the States. So he would like to text me while I am here and I would like to text my family while I'm there. Any suggestions besides having 2 phones? Including prices would be nice :)

Get a data plan. That will allow unlimited texting. I text my wife in the Philippines all the time.

... that won't charge extra?! Not possible, the providers north and south of the border are different and they all back charge each other. Not the be all and end all, but Rogers charges $100/month 'EXTRA' to add U.S. talk/text AND data on top of whatever other regular plan you might be on.

If the Canadian has a Canadian data plan and the American has an American data plan then they won't be charged the roaming rates. worse case scenario is that the American gets a pay as you go phone for the time they are in the US.

I have a US cellphone with an international data plan that costs an extra amount to my phone bill. Which supposedly lessens the roaming fees. Not sure how exactly that works. My advice is call your cellphone provider .

I have unlimited texting with our Bell plan, and I text my sister, mother, and several friends in the US without incurring any additional charges. There are also apps that allow you to talk/send messages, photos, and videos for free. My current favourite that my sister and use is Tango. It's free, but both of you have to have the app. We haven't used the voice calling feature of the Tango app, but we've used the video chat feature and text a lot. The video chat connects well, but we are both on wi-fi when we use it. For calling, I generally just call my family using google voice through my gmail account on the computer. It's free and is pretty much perfect voice quality. Most of the apps I've tried don't work well for calling, unless you're both on wi-fi. 3G connections just don't get it done.

I agree with QuebecOKie because my husband is from the US and we saved a whole lot of money using apps instead of stressing over the providers costs. You won't exactly get the greatest deal on any data when crossing the border it's just how they carriers work. My suggestion is to use apps. Another new app is Google Hangouts it's a great app or else Line. They both have calling and messenger features.

Oops I forgot to add. When we are apart, we use facebook a lot. Saves on bills also.

It's cheaper for both of us than a phone bill but we still try to talk on the phone at least every other day. Hearing the other person's voice is a special feeling.

We do Rogers. I had Rogers since 2009. I got a text plan for North America, I can't remember what it is now, but you have me curious so I'mma look :)

Okay so Rogers is being a jerk and won't load the dang page. So here's the link for you to take a peek at:

thanks for the great tips! We already use talk-a-tone with our google voice phone number... but paying extra for only 100mb of data isnt worth it in my opinion. Might just get a burn type phone for when im in the states. Thanks again :)

Your process may only take 6 months. US applications seem to go pretty quick.

i have rogers contract with unlimited international text and MY 10 people for free , which i am paying monthly 85 with Taxes included.
