I submitted my application for PR within Canada through CEC in December 2012 and was wondering what the process is for it. I heard from CIC in January regarding the processing of my fee and assigning a application number but have heard nothing since, is this normal? What is the typical communication process that CIC goes through for these applications? when do they request medical records etc.

The process is usually anywhere from 10 - 15 months after your application was received by CIC. Typically, the entire process is completed in 12 months. Once you are assessed for eligibility, CIC will send you a medical request. This will be between 8 - 10 months after your application filing date. After this CIC, conducts criminality and security checks, which depend in time frame from case to case. If everything is okay, you are given a passport request and stamped with a permanent residence visa.
i dont think they would only check your criminal and background thing after sending medical request. my friend got asked for her additional criminal record but she has not heard about anything regarding her medical request....
